Germany: Contamination of feed by dioxin

by Dominique Brault

The beginning of the year for over a thousand producers of poultry and pork in Germany was difficult. They have seen their farms quarantined by government officials following the discovery of print that had been forwarded to their farms had been contaminated with dioxin. This highly carcinogenic substance was found in feed through bold technique. Officials said the fat technical or industrial plant would have replaced the fat that is normally used as an energy source and at without the knowledge of feed manufacturers. This technique is
fat normally used in the manufacture of cosmetics and bio-lubricants and industrial oils. It seems that nine manufacturers of feed were victims of this situation. It's one of those manufacturers Harles Jentzsch who sounded the alarm about unusually high levels of dioxin in their feed. The company pointed to the company that produces biodiesel Petrotec who allegedly supplied the fat industry. The latter denies the allegations.
producers, victims of this feed are concentrated mainly in two regions is mainly in Lower Saxony and north. Flocks of these farms were quarantined in order to conduct more sophisticated analysis to determine the level of contamination. Producers expect significant financial losses or by the shortfall because they can not sell their products on the market and some may even have destroyed their livestock if the animals are infected.
Dioxin is a carcinogen in humans and does not ddoit enter the human food chain. A few months ago in Germany had been found in maize from Ukraine were contaminated with dioxin and was intended for animal feed.
